Industry & Energy
-
Due to population growth and economic development through industrial infrastructure, developing countries have become increasingly dependent on energy.
However, the facilities and technology necessary for further industrial development and energy security are out of reach, due to serious financial constraints.
In particular, of the 160 million people in the world deprived of electricity, 80% of them are poor peasants living in rural areas. -
Assistance for industry and energy is crucial if the international community wants to achieve the MDG targets for the eradication of extreme poverty.
The OECD DAC has confirmed the impact of infrastructure in achieving the MDGs in the "Guiding Principles on Using Infrastructure to Reduce Poverty.”* The development of transportation infrastructure will lower the costs of transporting goods, promote re-investment of production, enhance market accessibility, and create work opportunities. This will facilitate poverty alleviation, reduce regional gaps, and promote sustainable economic development.
* In addition, the availability of safe roads will encourage school attendance and invite qualified teachers, who in turn will help reach the goal of making primary education possible for all children. Furthermore, it will give greater access to hospitals and medical facilities, thus promoting maternal health and lowering infant mortality.

The development of industry and energy will provide energy to poverty-stricken areas, which will reduce the time needed to do household chores and allow children to spend more time at school.
