Prof. Deok-jong Yoo, Md. The first doctor to be dispatched overseas by KOICA
Ever since was in medical school, wanted to live a life dedicated to helping the poor and the sick in Africa, like Dr. Albert Schweitzer.
When KOICA announced in 1991 that it was looking for doctors to work on the Korean government's payroll for humanitarian causes abroad, I was naturally drawn to the organization.
My friends and family tried to dissuade me, asking how I could trademy comfortable life in Korea for a life of hardship in Africa.
My parents took it the hardest.
Nevertheless, I was determined to go through with it, and finally made my way to Uganda with KOICA.
There, started working at Mulago Hospital, a national evacuation hospital.
Later, lectured on medicine at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, teaching some 2,000 students in total, while also tending to
people suffering from AIDS, tuberculosis, and tropical diseases.
To me, volunteer work is something one must simply enjoy and do without
hoping for anything in return-even respect-from the people one helps.
Professor Yoo was named "Best Doctor" at Mulago Hospital in 1999 and "Professor of the Year" at Makerere University College in 2014.
He continues to work as KOICA Global Doctor in Ethiopia today.
