Environment and Other

  • Through cooperation in the environmental sector, KOICA aims to strengthen the partner countries` capacity to deal with environmental pollution and promote their sustainable development.
This sectoral priority is multi-sectoral which includes waste treatment, toxic chemical management, sewage treatment, air pollution reduction, the establishment of an environmental impact assessment system, the prevention of yellow dust storms, desertification, sea pollution, global warming, and the protection of ecosystems.
Furthermore, KOICA cooperates to improve the legal systems of partner countries, expand environmental management facilities, improve human resources capacity, and raise awareness on the importance of the environment.

  • Generally, environmental challenges faced by less-developed countries originate from the vicious cycle of poverty. These problems are aggravated by rapid industrialization and the inability to treat pollutants.
In order to restore the environment, both donor countries and recipient countries need to increase their interest and support for environmental protection.

  • International concern for the environment was manifested in Agenda 21, which was adopted at the Rio Conference in 1992, and in the Johannesburg Declaration, which was announced at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002.
The MDGs also emphasize active measures for environmental protection and highlight their relevance to poverty reduction.

  • For this reason, KOICA supports sustainable development that takes economic, social and environmental interests into account. KOICA is launching various cooperation projects to join with international efforts to fulfill Goal 7 of the MDGs, which urges the international community to encourage development in a sustainable manner.

  • In addition, KOICA also supports the minorities in developing countries.
To encourage their quality of living, KOICA implements the social welfare programs for women, children, and the poor in very local communities.
